The name is taken from Mary Mary of Teck, the Queen of King GeorgeV. However, the process was not easy. The ship was originally named "Victoria", by a long tradition of naming Cunard ships with names that end in "ia". However, company representatives at the King George V asked for permission, the liner named after the country's "greatest queen". George V misinterpreted and said he would look forward to the liner after his wife, Mary - not the longest ruling will have named King of Great Britain, Queen Victoria, asCunard had meant! The story is something of a legend and will probably not be true, but it is an interesting story. The real reason for Cunard's policy of "ia" names is that it is rather due to the merger with White Star Line, a company policy of naming ships, which ends ic 'names (like the doomed Titanic and her sister had ships Olympic and Britannic), so that a new naming system has been developed for the new company.
